These will be collaborative auditions for both shows:

I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick, directed by Brian Hansen

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by Ann-Marie MacDonald, directed by Victoria Liberatori.

 

Audition time:

Saturday, MARCH 29 from 11:00-4:00

 

Callbacks:

Sunday, MARCH 30 from 1:00-3:00

 

Location:

Auditions and callbacks will take place at the Vortex Theatre, 2004½ Central Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.  Entrance is on Buena Vista Drive.

 

Format:

If you are auditioning for Goodnight Desdemona, please prepare a 2-3 minute comedic monologue (Shakespearean or contemporary).  Otherwise, auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, improvisations and interviews with the directors. 

 

These two, contemporary comedies will play in repertory from June 13 to August 3, 2008. I Hate Hamlet opens June 13 and runs until July 27, 2008.  Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) runs June 27 through August 3, 2008.

 

I Hate Hamlet

Goodnight, Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)

Synopsis:

A modern television celebrity has been scheduled to play Hamlet in New York’s Shakespeare in the Park and is coached to play the role --and become a true star--by the ghost of John Barrymore, America’s biggest matinee idol of the 20th Century.
 

Roles include:
ANDREW RALLY, late 20s or 30s, a competent actor who has achieved national attention as television’s Dr. Jim Corman, rookie surgeon.


FELICIA DANTINE, 40s, a hard-driving New York real estate agent.


DEIRDRE MCDAVEY, late 20s, Andrew’s girl friend, “the breathless soul of romantic enthusiasm.”


JOHN BARRYMORE, at his prime, dashing and rakish, a fine actor who embodies the term “matinee idol.”


LILLIAN TROY, in her 70s, Andre’s agent, a regal, old world figure who actually knew Barrymore.


GARY PETER LEFKOWITZ, 30s-40s, a Hollywood producer with grand plans for Andrew.

I Hate Hamlet Rehearsals begin April 28th.

Show runs June 13 through July 27, 2008.

The director, Brian Hansen, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of New Mexico.  He has directed more than fifty productions, including Shakespeare, farce, and modern comedy.  His most recent assignment was Morning’s at Seven at the Adobe Theatre.

Synopsis:

One of the wittiest, bawdiest, most hilarious revisions of Shakespeare since The Reduced Shakespeare series. Part sci-fi, part romantic comedy, part action-adventure . . . plenty for everyone.

Roles include:
CONSTANCE LEDBELLY – Assistant professor suffering from unrequited love and an unfinished PhD thesis. Looking for female actor (mid-20s to late-30s) who has strong comedy talent and an intellectual flair.


OTHELLO/TYBALT/PROFESSOR CLAUDE NIGHT/GHOST– Roles require a male actor (mid-30s to early 50s) who can play a romantic lead, with strong comedy talent and experience with Shakespearean language.  Some stage combat experience or training.


JULIET/STUDENT/SOLDIER – Roles require a female actor (early 20s to late 20s) with strong comedy talent and experience with Shakespearean language.  Some stage combat, a plus.


DESDEMONA/RAMONA/MERCUTIO/SERVANT – Roles require a female actor (early 20s to early 30s) with strong comedy talent and experience with Shakespearean language. Stage combat experience or training required.


IAGO/ROMEO/CHORUS/JULIET'S NURSE– Roles require a male actor (early 20s to late 30s) with strong comedy talent and experience with Shakespearean language. Stage combat experience or training required.

Goodnight, Desdemona rehearsals begin May 14th.

Show runs June 27 through August 3, 2008.

The director, Victoria Liberatori, is Founding Artistic Director of the Princeton Rep Company/Princeton Rep Shakespeare Festival in Princeton, NJ.  Her directing credits include productions in New York at The Cherry Lane Alternative, Dixon Place, Echo Rep, and the Judith Anderson Theatre. She has
directed more than thirty productions, including all of Shakespeare's comedies, and numerous NJ premieres of contemporary plays. Her work has been reviewed in USA TODAY, The New York Times, The Star Ledger and The
Philadelphia Inquirer, among others.
