ABOUT THE PLAY
Ten years ago, a drag
troupe of cabaret performers known as THE DOLLS, presented their first
full-scale production at the KiMo Theatre and thereby

REVOLTING DRAG QUEENS: A STORY OF STONEWALL is THE DOLLS’ third
appearance in the regular season at The Vortex.
As always, THE DOLLS start with a fact-based premise and create an
original play. This time the setting is
The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in
Back in the bad old days, gay bars were
routinely raided by police who, until 1965, occasionally would give the names
of bar patrons to the newspapers.
Arrests were made on any pretext including holding hands or simply being
in the bar when the raid began. In 1965,
the political climate changed enough to lessen the frequency of the raids. Raids usually were scheduled early in the
evening so that business could be back to normal for the peak hours.
Generally, the sixth precinct went so far
as to tip off The Stonewall Inn prior to a raid. Then, suddenly, the pattern was broken. Just after 1:20 AM on Saturday, June 28,
1969, The Stonewall Inn was raided by eight policemen from the first precinct
(only one was wearing a uniform) and for some reason (there are several
theories), a riot erupted. Between then
and Wednesday, July 1, there were a total of three riots in which more than two
thousand civilians and four hundred policemen were involved.
If you think this sounds like pretty
serious stuff, remember it’s THE DOLLS! REVOLTING DRAG QUEENS: A STORY OF STONEWALL is an hilarious,
shocking and poignant evening of music, laughter and fashion that only THE
DOLLS can deliver. There's nothing like waging war in high couture!
